MWIMS is a special event set up for minority women who are pursuing a career in medicine. As medicine is changing, so is the demand for diversity within the field. However, minority women still face a significant disadvantage in pursuing a career in medicine. According to AAMC 2019 report, women make up 50.5% of medical students, however, Black and Latinx women are still the significant minorities. The goal of this event is to encourage minority pre-med women at the University of Maryland to continue to pursue their careers in medicine by providing an environment and space that represents people like them and promotes diversity and female empowerment in medicine. This year we take to changing the narrative!
