Shadowing professionals, scribing and volunteering at clinical facilities are a great way to gain experience before pursuing your career goals! SUMMER HEALTH  PROFESSIONS EDUCATION PROGRAM!

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage. SHPEP, formerly known as the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), expanded in 2016 to include a broader array of health professions.

All students who meet the Summer Health Professions Education Program eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a college freshman or sophomore at the time of application

  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5

  • Be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or an individual granted deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

  • Not have previously participated in the program.

Being a medical scribe can be beneficial for your graduate school application if you're planning on pursuing a career in medicine. Since documenting is now taking a technological turn in many clinics, scribes are needed much more by physicians these days. With this paid position, you will be able to work closely with health professionals and gain good practice with medical terminology. MEDLIFE!
If volunteering in a medical setting overseas sounds like an ideal experience, then taking a trip with MEDLIFE may be something you would want to consider. MEDLIFE is an organization that aims to provide free healthcare for local families in under-developed communities by setting up mobile clinics. These clinics focus on dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, gynecology and other health-related areas. MEDLIFE hosts trips in the winter, spring and summer.
